As the UK’s only dedicated market place for global manufacturing technologies, the Advanced Manufacturing Show was the ideal venue for FARO to demonstrate its world-class advanced measurement technologies.
Through visitor demand, FARO’s advanced Edge ScanArm HD was demonstrated throughout the course of the show. The Edge ScanArm HD combines the flexibility and the functionalities of a FARO Edge measuring Arm with the high-definition Laser Line Probe HD, creating a powerful contact/non-contact portable measurement system that is ideal for challenging application requirements.
Also in great demand from customers needing to measure smaller parts were demonstrations of the FARO Gage measuring arm. An industry leader in portable CMMs, this accurate 3D gauge ends users’ reliance on expensive and hard-to-use fixed CMMs. The FARO Gage offers high accuracy levels, improves measurement consistency, reduces inspection time and the ability to generate automatic reports.
FARO UK staff are now busy following-up the large volume of sales leads received at the exhibition and performing in-house practical demonstrations for potential customers throughout the UK.
The Advanced Manufacturing Show, brought to you by MWP, provides a platform for board-level decision makers, production and quality engineers to interact with the latest technology and gain a competitive edge by applying high-productivity solutions to enhance manufacturing performance, efficiency and quality.
Showcasing world class advanced manufacturing technologies, visitors will be able to review, plan and make their investment decisions for machine tools & accessories, laser, cutting tools and manufacturing software.
Co-located with the Subcon Show, The Engineer Design & Innovation Show and a world-class technology and innovation Conference led by The Engineer, this is an invaluable opportunity to gain insight from leading experts on current industry challenges and stay up-to-date on the latest manufacturing developments, best practice and new trends at one venue over three days.

Chesterfield based Ondrives Ltd is a precision manufacturer of gears, gearboxes, bearing housings and a wide range of associated products. In addition to supplying a large UK customer base, the company’s output is distributed worldwide through a network of agents. Ondrives supply an all-inclusive range of standard, off-the-shelf products that feature in its comprehensive gear product catalogue, and also design and manufacture ‘specials’ to customers’ individual requirements. Through the use of the company’s state-of-the-art design facilities and machine tools, Ondrives’ skilled staff are able to design and produce parts ranging in size from just a few millimeters, to components of one meter plus.
As part of Ondrives’ pursuit of continuous improvements the company recently purchased a FARO Gage measuring arm to help further increase its shop-floor measurement capabilities. Through continuous investment and development Ondrives has established an excellent global reputation. Much of this reputation has been built on the outstanding quality of our products. Our all-embracing inspection procedures and material traceability checks cover goods-inward, though all stages of production and on to final inspection.
Prior to final inspection, our production operatives take responsibility for the quality of their own output and have access to a wide range of premium measuring instruments. To help expand the range of accurate measurements our operators are able to make whilst components are located in the machines tools, we recently purchased a FARO Gage measuring arm.
“Not only has our new FARO product improved the accuracy and repeatability of our on machine checks, it allows us to correct errors at source. The Gage’s ease of use has considerably speeded-up our in-process inspection tasks and has resulted in reduced machine tool down-time and increased productivity.
“As the Gage is so user-friendly and intuitive, our operators who underwent the original product training have been able to explain its use to all other relevant colleagues. Now, each of our operators has become proficient in the Gage’s use. Given its popularity with our operators and its highly portable nature, the Gage is now used throughout our facility.

The Engineering Testing Show 2014 will bring together professional engineers across a wide range of disciplines and industrial sectors who share a professional interest in the practice of engineering testing.
During this event FARO will present its cutting-edge metrology products such the FARO Edge touchscreen computer for basic measurements, the recently launched FARO Laser ScanArm HD with the lightest laser line probe for non-contact measurements and the FARO Gage with barcode scanner.
One major aspect of automotive and aerospace manufacturing has long been that the critical nature of the final products they build requires their parts and sub-components to be free of defects.
However, the need for manufacturers to keep costs down and efficiency up in order to remain competitive in the marketplace has a negative effect on the manufacturers’ ability to ensure totally defect-free parts.
A check fixture is a device that allows production parts to be inspected by comparing the part to the geometry and features of the fixture. If the part and check fixture fit together, the part is “good”.These check fixtures, used in conjunction with hand tools, have provided a balance between the need to keep costs down and part integrity.
Given that check fixtures are extremely expensive and require a large time investment, it is not surprising that firms are now turning to the latest technology to help them eliminate check fixtures from their processes. Portable CMMs offer the ideal solution for keeping costs down and ensuring defect-free parts. Portable CMMs come in many forms, the most common of which are laser trackers, articulating arms and hand-held 3D Laser Scanners.
The choice of technology is based on the parts being measured and the information you need from the parts, and provides a cheaper alternative to the expense of check fixture. Portable CMMs eliminate the need for storage, maintenance and rework costs for check fixtures not currently in use.

With technology improving at a rapid rate and goods becoming more advanced, the parts required for manufacturing have also become more complex and complicated. This has meant the need for tighter tolerances when carrying out quality checks.
A traditional style co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) can be used to check a small run of parts and this process is very thorough and creates a large amount of data which can be useful. However, the downside to this method is of course that the parts have to be moved from the shop floor into the lab and this can be very time consuming. Also, using a CMM for high volume inspections can frequently generate bottlenecking caused by a lack of operators for the CMM or time to finish a complete inspection of a large amount of parts.
FARO offers the unique chance to win interesting prizes.
Just book a free product demonstration for any of our coordinate measuring machines or 3D imaging devices, choose your preferred Christmas gift from the wish list and you will be entered into the draw.

CAM2 SmartInspect software allows measurements without CAD data. The software was developed, focussing on a simple and intuitive operation and on a short learning curve. Even users with minimal knowledge of 3D measuring technology can achieve accurate measuring results in a short period of time.
The basic version of CAM2 SmartInspect has a clear user interface besides the most relevant functions. Actual pictures of components can, for example, be added to every measurement process providing the user an image-based support.
In the pro version of CAM2 SmartInspect the user is shown a 3D live view that serves to present the recorded dimensions to optimum effect. On the one hand it provides the user with a quick orientation. On the other hand, features that measure length, angle or a combination of both, can be recorded directly on the screen.
The automatic feature-recognition function speeds up the measuring process, as it assists the user in processing a measuring sequence with few, if any, clicks.
Another advantage: the software thinks for itself! It automatically suggests a range of functions and commands which might be needed in the course of the measuring process. In this way, inexperienced users get tips and tricks regarding the software’s capability and professionals can use this function to speed up the working process.
