A check fixture is a device that allows production parts to be inspected by comparing the part to the geometry and features of the fixture. If the part and check fixture fit together, the part is “good”.These check fixtures, used in conjunction with hand tools, have provided a balance between the need to keep costs down and part integrity.
Given that check fixtures are extremely expensive and require a large time investment, it is not surprising that firms are now turning to the latest technology to help them eliminate check fixtures from their processes. Portable CMMs offer the ideal solution for keeping costs down and ensuring defect-free parts. Portable CMMs come in many forms, the most common of which are laser trackers, articulating arms and hand-held 3D Laser Scanners.
The choice of technology is based on the parts being measured and the information you need from the parts, and provides a cheaper alternative to the expense of check fixture. Portable CMMs eliminate the need for storage, maintenance and rework costs for check fixtures not currently in use.

A traditional style co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) can be used to check a small run of parts and this process is very thorough and creates a large amount of data which can be useful. However, the downside to this method is of course that the parts have to be moved from the shop floor into the lab and this can be very time consuming. Also, using a CMM for high volume inspections can frequently generate bottlenecking caused by a lack of operators for the CMM or time to finish a complete inspection of a large amount of parts.

CAM2 SmartInspect software allows measurements without CAD data. The software was developed, focussing on a simple and intuitive operation and on a short learning curve. Even users with minimal knowledge of 3D measuring technology can achieve accurate measuring results in a short period of time.
The basic version of CAM2 SmartInspect has a clear user interface besides the most relevant functions. Actual pictures of components can, for example, be added to every measurement process providing the user an image-based support.
In the pro version of CAM2 SmartInspect the user is shown a 3D live view that serves to present the recorded dimensions to optimum effect. On the one hand it provides the user with a quick orientation. On the other hand, features that measure length, angle or a combination of both, can be recorded directly on the screen.
The automatic feature-recognition function speeds up the measuring process, as it assists the user in processing a measuring sequence with few, if any, clicks.
Another advantage: the software thinks for itself! It automatically suggests a range of functions and commands which might be needed in the course of the measuring process. In this way, inexperienced users get tips and tricks regarding the software’s capability and professionals can use this function to speed up the working process.

As with most custom choppers created by Paul Jr. Designs, the FaroArm was used to manufacture the birthday bike. It is important for PJD to be able to create unique pieces with speed and efficiency. Some elements, including the fuel tank, the seat pan and the cover of the primary belt give a glimpse of the real talent that goes into the design of each piece. All these elements have complex shapes and contours difficult to understand or replicate by hand.
The FaroArm scans the exact shape and location of the parts. The design and creation of cardboard templates are thus basically useless. The data collected by the arm can immediately be imported to a CNC machine or waterjet cutting tool to produce parts with high precision in perfect shape from the very start. The FaroArm therefore reduces waste, saves time and increases overall efficiency.
