We are proud to announce a triumph in the product design category of the prestigious Red Dot Award 2015. FARO impressed the 38 members of the jury with its handheld FARO Scanner Freestyle3D, yet another demonstration of its excellence in this, the most important product design competition.
Established 60 years ago, the Red Dot is a seal of high design quality across national and industry borders. The use of this famous seal is reserved for products that the international Red Dot jury confirms possess outstanding design that is head and shoulders above the rest. This year, 5,000 products from 56 different countries were submitted. The international jury was impressed with the innovative design of the FARO Scanner Freestyle3D and pronounced it a worthy winner of the sought-after Red Dot label. Its streamlined, three-armed shape was especially intriguing to the jury, supporting as it does the device’s range of functions and lending it an absolutely unmistakable appearance.
Usability and flexible applications were the focus when developing the FARO Freestyle3D. This is reflected in the design of this unique, industrial-grade handheld scanner. Thanks to its lightweight carbon fibre body, the scanner weighs less than a kilo and is therefore extremely portable and mobile. The application areas of the FARO Freestyle3D are diverse and range from construction to industrial production and forensics.
One key factor in its success was the scanner’s compact size, which allows it to be used in hard to reach areas, such as in industrial facilities. An intuitive plug and play system means that the Freestyle3D needs no warm-up and is quickly ready to use. Not only that, but the device also offers fast data entry, real-time visualisation and a high scan volume. This reduces the amount of time needed for scanning. The wide range of operating temperatures from 0-40°C makes scanning possible even in challenging environmental conditions. The 3D scan data can easily be imported into all commonly used CAD software solutions.
“When we developed the Freestyle3D we paid special attention to making sure that it was easy to use, so that even inexperienced 3D scanners can get to work immediately. Its unique design allows users to capture a high scan volume and create detailed documentation of a scene,” says Dr. Reinhard Becker, head of the product’s development at FARO.

This year, some 148 innovative products were in the running for the various trophies awarded by the organiser of the Industrie Lyon trade fair, the reference trade fair for all industry professionals. A panel of industrial and institutional experts and journalists from the specialised trade press reviewed the innovations submitted, and awarded the prize to the innovative FARO Edge ScanArm HD.
The Edge ScanArm HD is a compact and simple to use high performance contact/non-contact portable measurement system that combines the flexibility of the FARO Edge measuring arm with the power of the high definition FARO Laser Line Probe HD.
The FARO Laser Line Probe HD has been developed with complex application needs of automotive, subcontracting and mechanical engineering companies in mind. Intricate components can be captured in the finest level of detail as a result of the 2,000 actual points per scan line, while the 450 nm Blue Laser improves the detection of the line by the camera. The extra wide scan stripe and fast frame rate (280 frames/second) boosts productivity by increasing coverage and reducing scanning time. Furthermore the improved HDR (High Dynamic Range) Mode and advanced software algorithms allows seamless scanning across diverse surface materials regardless of contrast, reflectivity or part complexity, without any special coatings.

The FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D FARO has already prevailed twice with regards to the Hardware Product of the year award at the Construction Computing award contest, 2012 and recently in November 2014. Geospatial World, considered the world’s largest geospatial technical resource portal, confirmed this vote for the Focus3D in 2014 with the Technology Innovation Award acknowledging that it sets new standards with regards to performance and ease-of-use.

The seventh Construction Computing Award Ceremony took place on November 22nd in London.
At the exhibition DEUBAU 2012 the architecture magazines AIT and xia Intelligente Architektur (Intelligent Architecture) announced the tenth winner of the “Innovation Prize for Architecture and Construction”. A total of 18 different manufacturers competed with 21 products. This important award emphasises the significance of architecture in the construction industry.
This year the FARO Laser Scanner Focus3D was awarded the coveted innovation prize in the “Product of High Architectural Quality” category. A jury of well-known architects and engineers awarded this prestige architecture and design prize.
The Focus3D particularly impressed the jury with its innovative design and its technical performance. Moreover, the jury judged that the increasing need for 3D data was an indicator for the importance of this product. This means that time-consuming work such as measuring or area and quantity surveying can be significantly shortened very easily with the aid of modern laser scanners – thoroughly, quickly and cost-effectively.
With its high degree of precision, the device is able to assist construction managers, structural construction companies and the tradesmen carrying out the work with quality assurance at the building site: for example in the construction of façades, in checking the precise fit of assembled elements, in checking formwork elements in concrete structures, in positioning structurally sensitive supports and in numerous other applications.
