Today’s scanners employ one of two laser types: blue laser or red laser. The Laser Line Probe HD leverages an optically-superior blue laser technology.
Blue lasers have a shorter wavelength, which delivers improved scanning results with higher resolution thanks to greater ability to discern smaller detail in an object.
Blue laser technology also provides a 50% reduction in speckle noise that is proportional to wavelength and degrades measurement accuracy.
For the user the benefits are immediately evident: the FARO Laser Line Probe HD’s blue laser offers 50% better optical resolution than a red laser scanner. This difference is most noticeable when scanning optically challenging objects with dark, shiny or reflective surfaces. With red laser technology, it is sometimes necessary to use a special spray on the scanned object to make the surface less reflective, or multiple target placements.
The blue laser’s higher resolution dramatically reduces the need to spray parts. This removes an unnecessary step from your measurement process and saves you valuable time and productivity.

To continue optimizing their production processes and facilitate perfect coordination between speed and precise processing as well as consistent quality with utmost flexibility, Reichenbacher Hamuel GmbH has chosen FARO portable measurement technology. The first FARO Laser Tracker Vantage was purchased in 2013 in order to keep up with the increasing demands in machine assembly. Increasingly large and precise processing machines had to be installed quickly and properly, as well as configured both in house and at customer locations – a routine task for the FARO Laser Tracker.
With this instrument, it was for the first time possible to uncover weak points related to construction and manufacture in all dimensions during assembly and to counteract them accordingly. During the assembly of the machine – some of which were up to 25 meters long – the adjustment of the axles is carried out with the aid of the Laser Tracker. The live display of 3D coordinates.and the levelling function of the Laser Tracker are essential features for the measurement, configuration and subsequent documentation processes.
But the FARO Laser Tracker Vantage can be used in even more ways:
Through the synchronisation of the tracker’s position measurements using the machine control panel, the actuator can be tested and compensated as needed.
The geometric requirements that the customers demand can now be tested and documented independent of machine-specific transmitters. FARO measurement software CAM2 Measure 10 makes this process very easy and intuitive, which also significantly simplifies company communication with customers and suppliers. Linear compensation has thus become an integral part of machine assembly.
Last but not least, the Laser Tracker is still a mobile 3D-coordinate measurement device. For this reason, the Laser Tracker is regularly used to measure large-scale components as they arrive from external suppliers, and for classic quality assurance in production.
Small-scale components, complex milling and cast components, and drive components have been efficiently measured by a FARO Prime measurement arm since 2014. The measurement arm and Laser Tracker complement each other perfectly. In the meantime, the FARO Laser Tracker Vantage is valued by various divisions. This is why the decision was made to purchase an additional FARO Laser Tracker in 2014. The two Laser Tracker Vantage devices now share the workload. One is kept at the Reichenbacher Hamuel GmbH headquarters in Dörfles-Esbach, Germany, while the other is used across the globe for international projects.
We are proud to announce a triumph in the product design category of the prestigious Red Dot Award 2015. FARO impressed the 38 members of the jury with its handheld FARO Scanner Freestyle3D, yet another demonstration of its excellence in this, the most important product design competition.
Established 60 years ago, the Red Dot is a seal of high design quality across national and industry borders. The use of this famous seal is reserved for products that the international Red Dot jury confirms possess outstanding design that is head and shoulders above the rest. This year, 5,000 products from 56 different countries were submitted. The international jury was impressed with the innovative design of the FARO Scanner Freestyle3D and pronounced it a worthy winner of the sought-after Red Dot label. Its streamlined, three-armed shape was especially intriguing to the jury, supporting as it does the device’s range of functions and lending it an absolutely unmistakable appearance.
Usability and flexible applications were the focus when developing the FARO Freestyle3D. This is reflected in the design of this unique, industrial-grade handheld scanner. Thanks to its lightweight carbon fibre body, the scanner weighs less than a kilo and is therefore extremely portable and mobile. The application areas of the FARO Freestyle3D are diverse and range from construction to industrial production and forensics.
One key factor in its success was the scanner’s compact size, which allows it to be used in hard to reach areas, such as in industrial facilities. An intuitive plug and play system means that the Freestyle3D needs no warm-up and is quickly ready to use. Not only that, but the device also offers fast data entry, real-time visualisation and a high scan volume. This reduces the amount of time needed for scanning. The wide range of operating temperatures from 0-40°C makes scanning possible even in challenging environmental conditions. The 3D scan data can easily be imported into all commonly used CAD software solutions.
“When we developed the Freestyle3D we paid special attention to making sure that it was easy to use, so that even inexperienced 3D scanners can get to work immediately. Its unique design allows users to capture a high scan volume and create detailed documentation of a scene,” says Dr. Reinhard Becker, head of the product’s development at FARO.
