This landmark project combines team expertise with sophisticated manufacturing, engineering and technological capabilities.
Among the mix is one of our own. A FARO Laser Tracker Vanatge, which is used in order to ensure precision during the construction and alignment of the F-35 wings. Misalignments can cause machine downtime and significantly decrease machine performance; however, portable CMM’s such as our FARO Laser trackers and FARO measuring arms can help to mitigate these issues.

In the past, large structures such as wings or fuselages were difficult to make alike because there was no good way to measure them. With the advent of the laser tracker, precise, rapid, reproducible measuring over long distances finally became a reality.

One major aspect of automotive and aerospace manufacturing has long been that the critical nature of the final products they build requires their parts and sub-components to be free of defects.
However, the need for manufacturers to keep costs down and efficiency up in order to remain competitive in the marketplace has a negative effect on the manufacturers’ ability to ensure totally defect-free parts.
A check fixture is a device that allows production parts to be inspected by comparing the part to the geometry and features of the fixture. If the part and check fixture fit together, the part is “good”.These check fixtures, used in conjunction with hand tools, have provided a balance between the need to keep costs down and part integrity.
Given that check fixtures are extremely expensive and require a large time investment, it is not surprising that firms are now turning to the latest technology to help them eliminate check fixtures from their processes. Portable CMMs offer the ideal solution for keeping costs down and ensuring defect-free parts. Portable CMMs come in many forms, the most common of which are laser trackers, articulating arms and hand-held 3D Laser Scanners.
The choice of technology is based on the parts being measured and the information you need from the parts, and provides a cheaper alternative to the expense of check fixture. Portable CMMs eliminate the need for storage, maintenance and rework costs for check fixtures not currently in use.

Founded in 1997, Bischoff + Scheck is now the biggest name in tailormade transporters for racing teams, mobile medical labs, and off-road vehicles for exhibitions.
In 2007, when given the opportunity to work with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, Bischoff + Scheck jumped at the chance…and who wouldn’t? With Vodafone McLaren Mercedes individual needs in mind, Bischoff + Scheck designed and built a 3-storey building which could be fully dismantled for transportation and re-assembled in 2 days, making it ideal for being set up by the racetrack.
JCB are the world leaders for backhoe loaders and telescopic handlers, with 22 plants in four continents. This naturally brings with it the need for total quality assurance in operations.
Part of the company’s increasing investment has been in extremely accurate jigs and fixtures and new machining centres, which put JCB in direct control of component quality. These new machining centres are able to self-position and ‘find’ components to maximise machining precision, ensuring consistent quality to fabrications.
In order to ensure quality, JCB awarded the responsibility for their jig and fixture calibration procedures to Manchester Metrology. Based in North West England, Manchester Metrology is a full service provider, specialising in the measurement of engineered components that are manufactured to fine tolerances.
